The average Great Dane litter is eight to 10 puppies. Rebecca noted that it is rare for all the puppies in a litter as large as hers to survive, but credited the hard work of KAH for all 19 surviving.

One of the most apparent symptoms of this condition is when your dog knuckles its paws over. Knuckling can occur with the front or rear feet. Another sign is difficulty walking, where your dog exhibits an unsteady or uneven gait or wobbling. Dragging of the paws when walking is another common sign of the condition.

Some may resolve with supportive care and time while others may require surgery. And still others may never completely resolve. There are many ways you can support your dog after he or she is diagnosed with a condition that causes knuckling.

Per the Great Dane Club of America, Great Danes grow as much in one year as a human will grow in their first fourteen years! Great Danes are considered fully grown between 18 and 24 months of age. Most Great Danes will reach their full height by 18 months and continue adding muscle during their second year.

Great Danes are huge, powerful and elegant dogs. Males can reach 32 inches tall and weigh anywhere from about 100 to 120 pounds, while females may be 30 inches tall and weigh about 100 to 120 pounds (45 to 59 kilograms).

For such big dogs, Great Danes sure get the short end of the stick when it comes to longevity. Great Danes live between 8-to-10 years, with some living only 6 or 7 years, and a lucky few reaching the ripe old age of 12. Compared to small dogs, which can live almost twice as long, this hardly seems fair.

Your best bet is to be proactive here and teach him how to get what he wants. If he's pawing at you, you can get up and leave. If you come back and he paws again, continue to get up and leave until he stops — then, when you return, and he doesn't paw, give him all the attention and loving in the world.

Puppy on the right, shows the inside leg as an example of the beginning of the early knuckling over we see at 5 - 7 weeks of age. This is not at all unusual and often corrects itself as the dog matures to 8 - 9 weeks of age, provided they are on the right diet.

Many large dog breeds like Great Danes benefit from joint supplements such as glucosamine. If your dog is diagnosed with arthritis, your vet will most likely recommend a chewable supplement veterinarian-grade dose of glucosamine and chondroitin.
