Introduction

Goddess Maha Kali (literally translated as Great Kali) is the Goddess of Liberation.

She is known as the preserver of Earth, but due to her destructive powers, She is also known as the “Dark Mother.”

Her eyes are portrayed as red with intoxication and absolute rage, and small fangs occasionally protrude out of Her mouth, and Her tongue is lolling. She wears a garland of skulls around her neck, which signifies the memory and wisdom of human existence.

In some illustrations, one of the upper hands of the Goddess is shown in Varada Mudra (the gesture of generosity), and one of the lower hands holds a Trishul.

Note – a Kali without the tongue is called Bhadra-Kali, who does not reject feminine grace totally.
